The next generation of MLB stars got their introduction to the league Sunday.

The first round of the 2024 MLB Draft began Sunday in Texas ahead of the 2024 MLB All-Star Game festivities. The Cleveland Guardians own the first pick, which is the first time in franchise history that it has held the top pick.

College hitters dominated the prospect rankings heading into the night, but plenty of talent exists to fill any holes that exist within the selecting organizations.

Bazzana was the crown jewel of the draft and could reach the MLB level in short fashion. He his .407/.568/.911 for Oregon State in 2024 and was a finalist for the Golden Spikes award.

Bazzana’s selection at No. 1 is historic, as he becomes the first second baseman and first Australian player to be selected with the top pick.

The first pitcher off the board was Wake Forest’s Chase Burns, who got quite the introduction to his new franchise.

Burns transferred to Wake Forest prior to the 2024 season and was elite for the Demon Deacons. He went 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 100 innings and helped lead Wake Forest to the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.

Another notable pick was Jac Caglianone at No. 6, as he joins a promising Royals team. He hit .419/.544/.875 for Florida in 2024 and also was a pitcher for the Gators. He was marketed as a two-way player, but may end up just being a hitter at the pro level.

The first high school player did not come off the board until the ninth pick, which the Pittsburgh Pirates used to select shortstop Konor Griffin. He was rated as the No. 9 overall draft prospect and as the top high school player by MLB.com.

The most interesting selection of the night came in the middle of the first round, as the Seattle Mariners selected pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje at No. 15. Cijnte is no typical pitcher, as he is a switch-pitcher.

He is aiming to become the first switch pitcher in MLB since Pat Venditte, who made 61 appearances between 2015-2020. Cijntje projects as a starter at the major league level, and could be a force to be reckoned with in the American League.

Sunday saw the first two rounds occur, but the bulk of the draft will continue on Monday and Tuesday. Rounds 3-10 are set to take place on Monday while rounds 11-20 will occur on Tuesday ahead of the All-Star Game.
