D.C.-area forecast: No letup in the heat today. Cooler by Friday, then heating up again.

*Heat advisory today from noon to 8 p.m.*

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

1/10: A decent breeze is the only saving grace of yet another hellishly hot and humid day.

  • Today: Hot and extremely humid. Isolated afternoon storm? Highs: Mid- to upper 90s.
  • Tonight: Evening showers and storms, a bit less humid overnight. Lows: Low to mid-70s.
  • Tomorrow: Not quite as hot and humid. Isolated p.m. storm? Highs: Low to mid-90s.

Friday could struggle to reach 90 and brings our best chance of needed rain. So don’t say we never bring you good news, okay? As for today, it’s another brutally hot and humid one, with some showers and storms possible this evening. Tomorrow’s not quite as hot or humid, but we are headed right back in the wrong direction this weekend into next week.

Today (Wednesday): Partly to mostly sunny, hot and extremely humid again. Should get to afternoon highs in the mid- to upper 90s with the heat index peaking at 105 to 110. One difference today is a noticeable breeze from the south, increasing to 10 to 20 mph by the afternoon. So that should move the air around a bit, although it will only serve to reinforce the humidity surge from the south. Might see an isolated shower or storm during the afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: A line of showers and storms looks to cross the region from west to east around 6 p.m. to midnight as a cold front approaches and moves through. However, it’s uncertain if this will be a solid line dousing the entire region, or a broken line with hit-or-miss showers and storms. A few storms could contain damaging winds. The humidity starts to ease a little overnight as the breeze comes from the west and lows dip to the low to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Thursday): The heat and humidity are a little more reasonable. Highs head for the low to mid-90s with mostly sunny skies. Moderate humidity (dew points in the mid-60s) only pushes the heat index a degree or two higher as a light breeze comes from the west. Only the chance of an isolated afternoon shower or storm as the front pushes off to our east. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Still just the chance of an isolated shower or storm during the evening. A few showers and storms could develop overnight as humidity rises again with lows in the low to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium

Occasional showers and storms are more likely Friday into Friday night as the front drifts back in our direction. The chance of more numerous showers and storms is higher from near D.C. and I-95 to the east, and lower to the west. Humidity is up again, but with plenty of clouds and hopefully some needed rain, we’re cooler with highs in the 80s to near 90. Friday night lows settle in the low to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium

For the weekend, the front may stay close enough for the chance of a few showers and storms on Saturday as we trend hotter again, with highs near 90 to the low 90s. We are headed for at least the mid-90s on Sunday with an even lower chance of a shower or storm. Skies should be at least partly sunny both days with moderate to high humidity. Confidence: Medium
